Is the Disney Dining Plan a Bad Value?

I’ve stopped using the DDP about 10 years ago. Since then i have started tracking our spending and typically save $200-300 per trip by just paying out of pocket. We are not huge eaters, not do we eat the most expensive meals, so it does not add value for us.

We did it once, we did not like because we felt it steered us into making certain choices that we would not otherwise make and overall take was that it technically saved money had we made those choices without the DDP. However, if we didn't have the DDP we would not have made those same choices.

A couple of years ago we considered the Quick Service Dining Plan (two quick service meals and a snack) but realized that it would only save us money if we got alcohol with every quick service meal.

I'm sure the DDP works great for some people and even if you like it just because it puts certain aspects of your trip on auto pilot (versus actual savings) then that is great. However, it is not for us.

With the kids eat free promotion this year, we bought the dining plan twoce, buy only for a one night stay on arrival. We did this to essentially get refillable mugs and the meal and snack was a nice bonus. For one trip we did the table servive DDP for our one night and used the credit at Topolinos for breakfast. This felt like a great value.

Yes, the kids promo is great! I never had any desire to even try the dining plan before, but like you, I bought it just for the first half of a split stay, and it worked beautifully for all-you-care-to-eat dining with my 3-year-old who doesn't have the biggest appetite. I'm actually considering doing it for one more 2026 trip before the deal changes for 2027 to 20% off for kids instead of kids eat free.

Thanks for posting that, I can see this being a viable thing for a short stay, particularly the Quick Service Dining Plan.

The reason we like it is having food paid for ahead of time. Yes we have to pay for drinks and tips but it’s nice to not have to worry about getting what we want without worrying about the price

It definitely helps to curb the spending fatigue that sets in (for me).

To me that would be the reason to buy it.

After just paying for Tusker House without a dining plan, I will say my wife should always do the dining plan. i thought the 40% off was the normal price. LOL.... still love it!

It can be a great value if you really max it out. For example, if we have a kitchen when we stay, we don't do it. Or if we know we don't plan on doing a lot of character meals, we don't do it. We have a trip coming up with some Disney first timers who love princesses, so we will probably do it so we can do a ton of character meals. So if your trip is Topolino breakfast, 1900 Park Fare, Sanaa, and Polite Pig QS, it absolutely saves you money. Don't forget, it includes a cocktail at each meal!! However, if you are a burger, chicken tender and mac and cheese family, skip it.
