Mandalorian & Grogu Movie
Did anyone else buy their tickets to Mandalorian & Grogu? While I know there's been some chatter that this isn't going to be a good movie and will just feel like a 2 hour TV show, there hasn't been a new Star Wars movie in theaters since the Rise of Skywalker in 2019, so its been 7 years! A lot has changed and as a Star Wars fan I'm personally excited to see another Star Wars movie on the big screen.
I bought my tickets in IMAX too since Jon Favreau has said the movie was made for IMAX.

Are you going to see the Mandalorian and Grogu in theaters?

I haven't yet, but am planning on seeing it! Good to know it was made for IMAX - I'll make sure we buy tickets in that format.
We depart for London on May 23rd. I was able to get tickets for early showing on May 21st. Looking forward to it, even if it isn’t supposed to be good. I really wish they had kept this as a series instead of a movie, but we deal with what is presented to us!!

Super excited for this movie! Looking to get tickets to watch with my family during opening weekend -- might even splurge on IMAX tickets as well

My son & I will be on the Disney Wonder! I hope we can see it on the ship the day it comes out. We are excited even if it's just a good 2 hour show. We enjoyed the Mandalorian.

Forgot to post a follow up, we saw it in IMAX at a completely packed theater on Friday May 22nd. I personally thought it was a good, but not great movie. It doesn't have the same "universe changing" or large impact that the Skywalker Saga has in each movie and there wasn't anything offensive in it that at least in my opinion Star Wars fans would go back and complain about. There's no "Somehow Palpatine returned" or hyperspace into a Star Destroyer moments. It is made to be a "safe", small universe movie. Don't get me wrong though - it was an enjoyable movie. I liked it, I just don't think it will go down in history as one of the great Star Wars movies.
I am shocked that the 2nd weekend box office is so bad ($24M) - I thought it would do better because the Rotten Tomatoes audience score is pretty good, so I thought word of mouth might actually boost the box office. But perhaps Disney has damaged Star Wars too much.

Regardless of how well the movie does - Disney is making a killing off of merchandise sales, so I think it will still ultimately be viewed as a success by Disney even if the movie itself isn't viewed as one. Grogu merch is still selling really well :)
Personally, I want Star Wars movies to do well so Disney continues to invest time, money and effort into making good ones :) But maybe a poor box office will result in them working harder on telling good stories.

I was surprised by intiial #’s as well, given how well the Mandalorian show has been received by fans. It seems to be the one piece of storytelling from Disney-Star Wars that all fans enjoy consistently.
My best guess is what you alluded to- Disney has harmed its Star Wars-movie reputation quite a bit. I think it will take 1-2 solid movies to help solidify that reputation again, where people actually anticipate and get excited for movies again. (I was very excited for this, and am in the camp of “i want more star wars- always”)
I also think word of mouth is a bit more mixed than the score might show. Many people told me, prior to me seeing it, that it was essentially a 2+ hr long episode of the Mandalorian. I’m not sure the small universe/small impact play was the right one. You could’ve tied in this smaller story to some broader conflict/villain/happening in the shows etc and given it a little more significance. Something that makes people feel like they’re going to be missing out for not knowing what happens. I’m glad Disney didnt do anyting too ridiculous(you mentioned hyperspace into a star destroyer..) but surely there is a happy middle here. I’m not sure if theres a massive market for “longer mandalorian episodes… but at the movies!” I know i would go for sure, but I am a die hard fan.
All that being said- totally agree with you. Good, not great movie that I’m happy to have had. Hoping it marks more Star Wars movies thay are committed to restoring the storytelling and unique fun of seeing SW in the theaters.
